Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Besom brooms are traditionally constructed brooms made of a bundle of twigs tied to a stouter pole. They are still made today and sold at garden centers as an outdoor broom. They are the broom traditionally associated with witches. As a result of its construction around a central pole, the brush of the besom is rounded instead of flat. The bristles can be made of many materials including, but not limited to straw, herbs, or twigs. Traditionally the handle is of hazel wood and the head is of birch twigs. Modern construction uses bindings of wire and string (instead of the traditional split withy) and the head is secured by a steel nail instead of a wooden dowel.

Supposedly, an upward pointed besom (bristles up), especially over or near a doorway, will help protect the house from evil spirits or negative energies.

Origins

Bible

[...] I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.

Isaiah 14:23 (KJV translation)

Language origins

There is a reference to besoms in the book, "Burning Lights," by Bella Chagall (Bella Rosenfeld), with illustrations by her famous husband, Marc Chagall. She refers to besoms as a switch used in a women's bath house, perhaps in some treatment of women's backs.

'Besom' is also a common Scottish expression, a noun used to describe 'playful' little girls "dinnae pu' ya brother's hair, ya wee besom" or a woman of low moral standing, a hussy.

'Besom is also pronounced in the same way as the Dutch word 'bezem' (meaning 'broom').

Wiccan; circle preperation?
Q. So i recently became interested in wicca and im trying to cast a circle but i read that a besom(broom made of twigs) and salt water is needed. because i do not have a "besom", is it really needed or can i use a regular broom? thank you for you answers also do wiccans just worship Elementals, not deities or the lord and lady.

A. You need to learn about Wicca before you do any rituals. Start with reading Scott Cunningham's 'Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner' and Raymond Buckland's 'Complete Guide to Witchcraft'. There's also a book called 'Wicca for One', but I'm not sure who the author is. Stay away from Silver Ravenwolf. Her Wiccan/Witchcraft scholarship is inferior, as are her morals. Also, there are some websites you can check out, too. btw, you can use a regular broom with straw bristles. Also, instead of using salt water, some people use plain salt, flour, or may visualize the circle. Some witches don't even cast a circle at all. Honestly, the only tool you need is your mind. Many blessings on your journey.

Is it okay that I hate blue eyeshadow?
Q. A broom is a cleaning tool consisting of stiff fibres attached to, and roughly parallel to, a cylindrical handle, the broomstick. In the context of witchcraft, "broomstick" is likely to refer to the broom as a whole. A smaller whisk broom or brush is sometimes called a duster. An old form of broom was the besom, which was made simply of twigs tied to a handle, and was relatively inefficient as a cleaning implement. help please omg goats LAikke 0mq alerosio my bEllLy is Briqht PiNk cuz kitty hair is all over it :( help me john..richards lampshade & goats ? omg please help me omg plastic water bottles...such a bad idea. can i shave my hair off and glue to my eyelids? i want eyelidhair.. alessandra is all about it... toilet bowl toilet… [cont.]

Why does my wife's new broomstick only fly in left hand circles?
Q. Answer This is obviously a steering geometry fault the broomstick needs tracking up I believe Kwik fit are experts at tracking broomsticks. One other posibility is that there are more bristles on one side of the broomstick's head this will cause uneven airflow through the rear end and could well cause the transport to go round in circles. Regarding the dizzyness I recommend your wife stays off the broomstick for a short "spell" . Update I have just taken in part exchange a broomstick that only goes round in right hand circles, I could let you have this at a very favourable price. Perhaps if you tied the two together, you would end up with a broomstick that flies straight. Best wishes from Honest Johns personal transportation services.… [cont.]

A. The broomstick is electrically charged, so when flying in a magnetic field like the earth's, it will veer to the side. There is clearly a fault in the broom recharging system. The wing of bat and eye of toad must be applied in reverse order, as their electrical potentials are currently inverse to what they should be.
